With the warmer days and sunshine, everyone is getting a bit of “spring fever” and for some that means knocking the dust off your gardening gloves, heading outside, and planning your landscape. You can select from different types of flowers to plant in April. For example, choose ground cover flowers for barren areas of your yard, and use colorful flowers for entry ways or flowerbeds. Border flowers are ideal to plant along a fence or retaining wall.
Marigold
Marigolds are one of the best flowers in plant in April. These white, orange, and yellow flowers bring a lot of color to flowerbeds, and also do well in containers. They do come in a variety of heights, so keep this in mind when choosing a location for planting. Usual bloom time is mid-summer till frost.
Another great choice is Sweet William. These flowers are a great addition to your yard, especially if you would like to attract butterflies! Plant Sweet William in full sun to partial shade. Usual bloom time is May till frost.
The Bleeding Heart flower bursts into bloom in late spring, with a spray of pretty pink flowers that look almost like hearts. This flower does well as a ground covering and is tolerant of various soil conditions. This is a popular plant and has the added bonus of being deer and rabbit resistant! Plant in partial shade.
Pansies
The all-time favorite – Pansies! Pansies are a short plant, and come in many varieties of colors. Use pansies for borders, flower beds, container pots and at the base of mailboxes. Plant pansies during April, but after frost warnings have passed for your particular planting zone. Usual bloom time is 4-6 months, depending on the part of the USA you live in.
